Can Cats Eat Human Foods?

Some cat's owners still don't know that some human foods are very dangerous for cats. And I think that information about what cats can eat or not is very useful for their owners, so let see a list of human foods that toxic to cats now.

Onions, Garlic, & Related Root Vegetables

Onions contain a substance (N-propyl disulphide) which destroys red blood cells in the cat, causing a form of anemia called Heinz body anemia. Garlic contains a similar substance in a lesser amount.

Tomatoes, Green (raw Potatoes)

These foods are members of the Solanaceae family of plants, which includes the Deadly Nightshade, and contain a bitter, poisonous alkaloid called Glycoalkaloid Solanine, which can cause violent lower gastrointestinal symptoms. The Feline Future web site offers a rare description of a cat which was close to death from ingesting just one cherry tomato.

Chocolate

It's becoming more widely known that chocolate is very toxic to both cats and dogs. Theobromine is the offending substance here. Janet Tobiassen Crosby, D.V.M. has an excellent article on the symptoms, effects, and treatment of chocolate toxicity.

Grapes and Raisins

These foods' toxicity has mainly been found in dogs, in quantities of varying amounts. The ASPCA advises: "As there are still many unknowns with the toxic potential of grapes and raisins, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises not giving grapes or raisins to pets in any amount." That's good enough for me.

Milk

Although milk is not toxic to cats, it may have adverse effects. Simply put, adult cats fed a nutritious diet don't need milk, and many cats are lactose-intolerant, which means that the lactose in milk and milk products produces stomach upset, cramps, and gassiness.

If your cat loves milk, and begs for it, a small amount of cream may be okay, two or three times a week. (The more fat in the milk, the less lactose.) Another compromise is CatSip, a product made from skim milk with an enzyme added that helps the digestion of lactose. Catsip is available in supermarkets such as Safeway, Albertson's and A&P, as well as pet products chains, such as PetSmart and Petco.

My cat wouldn't drink water when we first took her in, so we bought this special milk that's made for cats. But it's very good that you said that thing about milk because most people think milk is okay for cats, milk that humans drink anyway, because that's what everyone thinks of when they think of cats. So it's something to remember and be cautious of! :)

What about nanners? Or cantelope?

PaHaRs said...

Very hard question for me, but now i think i have some answer for you. After asking my friend that he is a veterinarian, he say that he never heard about bad effect from nanners and cantelope for cats before. But normally main food for cats are meat. So if you want to give nanners and cantelope for your cats at sometime, he say that's ok. I think my answer will help you in some ways. And thank you again for your great question.

My little Scrappy is lactose intolerant. She seems to know this, though because she avoids milk. She won't drink out of the cereal bowl with the other two. Her tummy reacts badly to it!

And WELCOME to the Catblogosphere!

Thanks for this important post!

Some cats can drink milk without any problems however - not all cats are lactose intolerant. I can drink small amounts of milk with no problems - my humans let me drink the little bit of milk left in the bottom of their cereal bowls.

So nice to meet you. Our Mom tells Dad all the time not to give us anything with onions and garlic but sometimes we eat it by mistake. Does it take lots and lots of onions to make us sick or just a little?

Hi, this is really good information. I didn't know about tomatoes or onions. My cat almost always steers away from human food. But I've just discovered he's mad about seaweed (roasted sheets)! He was going crazy over a little piece I dropped on the floor and begged for more. I just wanted to know and make sure it wouldn't upset his tummy or anything?
